Dr. Rainer Hable is an Attorney at Law admitted to the Vienna Bar with a focus on Supreme Court litigation before European Courts. He teaches ECJ Litigation at the Lawyers’ Academy.


Previously, Dr. Rainer Hable was a Member of the Austrian Parliament, where he served as a Member of the National Security Council and group spokesperson in the parliamentary committees on EU Affairs, Budget, and Finance. Furthermore, he served as a parliamentary group leader on the ad hoc Hypo Inquiry Committee, the longest-running inquiry in Parliament’s history.

Before entering politics, Dr. Hable practised law with leading international law firms and clerked with the Vienna Court of Appeals. He worked in policy roles at the UK Department for Transport in London and at the EU Commission Secretary-General in Brussels. At the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), he taught public finance and economics. At Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, he researched on financial relations of federal states and acted as consultant to the regional government.


Rainer Hable studied Business (Diploma), Economics (Diploma), and Law (Mag. iur.) at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, as well as Public Policy (M.Sc. in Public Financial Policy) at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He wrote his dissertation (Dr. iur.) at the Department of Constitutional Law and Political Science of Universität Linz. He is also a graduate of the European Law Academy in Trier and the Academy of European Law in Florence.


Upon graduation from a humanistic grammar school (Neusprachliches Gymnasium), Rainer Hable served as one-year volunteer in the Austrian Army. He remains on active duty as a reserve officer and infantry platoon commander to date.
